SBGHC welcomes new technology to improve breast cancer treatment

The South Bruce Grey Health Centre (SBGHC) has welcomed the MOLLI 2 System to its care facilities. The machine is a wire-free and radiation-free system used to find tumours that are too small to be felt during surgery.

In a media release, the SBGHC said before the machine, patients would need to get a wire marker implanted on the day of surgery, to locate any abnormalities.

"The MOLLI 2 System is an innovative technology that enables radiologists to mark the location of lesions with the MOLLI Marker, roughly the size of a sesame seed," said SBGHC. "Surgeons then use the MOLLI Wand and MOLLI Tablet to locate the tumour."

The technology will be a permanent addition to the health centre's care.

"Breast cancer treatment can be daunting for patients and I believe the MOLLI 2 System helps to improve the process in a couple of ways," said Dr. John Stirrat, SBGHC general surgeon. "With cancer surgery, the more information we can get about the tumour location during surgery, the better. The quality of this tumour location technique is superior to the old guidewire technique, as we get a simple and effective display of the position of our marker whenever needed during surgery."

Stirrat said having a more effective display will allow for a smaller and better-positioned incision, meaning less pain and better cosmetic outcomes.
