Marine Heritage Society volunteer gets provincial award

A board member with Saugeen Shores Marine Heritage Society will receive a provincial award for volunteering later this month.

Vicki Tomori was announced as one of the 14 recipients of the 2024 June Callwood Outstanding Achievement Award for Voluntarism in May.

Tomori, who was nominated due to her tireless work organizing efforts to restore the Chantry Island Lighthouse, says it's an honour to be recognized.

"It's wonderful, I'm so appreciative," she said. "It just feels really weird, I'm usually the one nominating. It feels strange being on this side of the coin, but it's very humbling and I'm very exciting. I'm very pleased."

Tomori was nominated by fellow society members for organizing restoration efforts and boat tours. She's been with the local organization since it began in 1997 and Tomori says the group has accomplished many amazing things, including restoring the lighthouse on Chantry Island, just through community contributions.

"We brag about having done it without any government funding. We fundraise, we go by donation and community support. If the municipality wasn't so supportive, we wouldn't have the success that we've had over the last 23 years for sure.

Tomori will officially receive her award at a ceremony in Owen Sound on June 20.

Until then, she'll be busy running the Chantry Island Boat tours. They recently launched booking for boat tours online, and you can find a link at the Marine Heritage Society's website.
