An increase in garbage bag service fees is coming this summer to residents in Wellington County.
A media release from the county says that due to "costs increasing in most sectors since the last fee increase in 2016," the price of garbage bags will be going up as of July 1.
The cost of collecting a large user bag will go from $2 to $2.50, a small user bag will go from $1.50 to $2. Additionally, bag fees at waste facilities will go from $2 to $2.50, unless the bag is a yellow user pay bag, which can be taken to the facilities at no charge.
The county states that the increase in fees is necessary to "ensure the continued provision of high-quality waste management services to residents across the county."
"Costs in most sectors, including manufacturing, have increased significantly since the last fee increase in 2016," said Warden Andy Lennox. "The County is committed to maintaining best waste management practices and ensuring efficient operations while preserving environmental integrity."
"Wellington County keeps fees lower than other municipalities which use a similar user pay system, funding waste disposal through a combination of taxation and individual fees," commented Councillor Stephen O’Neill, Solid Waste Services Committee Chair. "This approach ensures fairness and accountability, as residents pay for the waste they generate. By reducing waste at home, individuals can effectively manage their disposal costs, promoting responsible environmental stewardship within our community."
