Varney Pond to remain closed for 2024 summer season

The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority (SVCA) has announced that the pond at Varney Conservation Area will remain closed for the 2024 summer season.

The closure, which began in 2023, was due to concerns over the structural integrity of the water control infrastructure and its ecological impact on Camp Creek.

A comprehensive engineering review highlighted several issues, prompting the SVCA to take the measure and ensure public safety.

"Securing all necessary environmental approvals is a critical component of this process, involving coordination with several regulatory agencies," said a release from the SVCA.

The SVCA emphasized that reopening the pond would require significant investment and a detailed review process, including a Public Safety Risk Assessment and Safety Plan.
