Alexandra Community School in Owen Sound has begun fundraising for new accessible playground equipment for kids with special needs.
"One of my teachers, as her annual learning plan, sparked the idea of working towards raising funds for an accessible playground," said Principal Staci Marck. "We do have a lot of students who can't use any of the equipment at the school. There's nothing accessible for students in wheelchairs and there are a lot of elements missing for students with high needs, such as students who live with autism."
So far, Marck said the school has held bake and yard sales towards the cause.
"We have been told, believe it or not, that we have to have $25,000 already in the bank before we can even plot out where the structure would go in the yard," she said. "We're a long way away, but we definitely want to become more accessible so that our kiddos have access to good quality play equipment that they can really benefit from."
If you would like to donate, cheques can be sent to the school and made out to "Bluewater District School Board" with a note for the Alexandra accessible playground. For further inquiries, you can contact the school at 519-376-6306.
