Huron-Kinloss empowering women in construction

The Township of Huron-Kinloss reports the recent round of Women in Construction has come to a close, exceeding expectations and targets.

The latest program wrapped up with a shed build for the township and an electrical workshop.

Over the last year the program introduced workshops to give 60 local women the chance to explore the trades or obtain valuable certifications.

The goal of the program is to diversify the employee base of construction trades by providing women with hands-on skills and certifications.

"The program has helped me build my self-confidence and allowed me to build my skills to be successful in my new career," said Kelly Weiler, who completed the Spring cohort. "Also, the program helped me get recognized by employers which had been a struggle for me in the past. My favourite part was the hands-on work which helped me gauge where I was at in terms of skill."

The Women in Construction program had the opportunity to use their new skills thanks to Habitat for Humanity Grey Bruce allowing the participants to practice on-site. The Adult Learning Centre facilitated academic upgrading opportunities.

“Women In Construction has offered Huronia Area Aboriginal Management Board (HAAMB) client’s space in their paid training, and we have been very grateful for this partnership. Several HAAMB clients have successfully received Skid-Steer, Mini Excavator, and Chainsaw certifications. HAAMB looks forward to partnering with Women in Construction on any future programs,” said April John, Project Coordinator with HAAMB. "A special shout-out goes to Jason and Kristin for being awesome colleagues to work with!", referring to Project Coordinator Kristin Dimmick and Workforce Development Coordinator, Jason Wilson of the Women in Construction program.

The Township, partnered with Bruce County, the UBC Local 2222 Carpenters Union, Fanshawe College, and VPI Working Solutions for their unwavering support, and provision of time, materials, and space.
