Wellington County prepping for second annual Multicultural Festival

Wellington County will host its second annual Multicultural Festival this summer.

In preparation, the county is asking for applications from performers, exhibitors, and food vendors to take part in the event. Anuradha Dam, Economic Development Project Coordinator for the county, says the event is meant to bring different cultural backgrounds together to celebrate, which is what happened at last year's inaugural festival.

"What made it a real success was the cultural performances that were showcased in last year's event. It involved over 10 cultural performances and we also had more than 10 local community organizations participating in the event, offering and engaging in different live activities and games," Dam shared.

This year's event is scheduled for July 13. Dam says people can expect a similar experience this year, just on a larger scale.

"A diverse range of cultural performances, global cuisines, interactive activities and an overall celebration of community bonds. This year, we intend to not restrict the festival only to the main stage, we will also be involving all other aspects of the Wellington County Museum and Archives, that's where the festival happened last year and it will take place there this year, as well," added Dam.

The event is very important for a number of reasons, and Dam notes that chief among them is a celebration of the diversity and inclusivity of the wider community at large.

"So it's a platform for cross-cultural engagement and interaction and through this celebration we're also looking at attracting a broader audience, promoting economic growth by encouraging increased tourism and supporting local businesses. It also makes all newer community members and longtime residents come together and feel a sense of belonging and welcoming by extending a warm welcome to everyone," Dam enthused.

Any interested performers, food vendors or exhibitors can submit their applications to participate online by March 31 at wellington.ca/multiculturalfestival. All applicants will be notified if they have been selected by April 8.
