OPP could have office space in Wingham Fire Hall

North Huron council is directing staff to prepare a lease agreement with Huron County OPP to establish office space in the Wingham Fire Hall.

The OPP says it's looking to move out of satellite office space in F.E. Madill Secondary School and into a place with more visibility in the community. Potential options included moving into the former concession booth in the Wescast Community Centre.

Council said of the options presented, only one satisfied the criteria of improved police presence.

Reeve Paul Heffer said from those he had spoken to, the fire hall seemed like the preferred option.

"I've been getting some feedback from some of the storeowners and they'd like to have a little bit more presence on the main street," said Heffer. "I'm in favour of the fire hall and I was talking to Deputy (Chief) Chad Kreger and he said it'd work very well at the fire hall too."

The OPP said it won't be financially contributing towards the costs to create the shared office space, so the town will fund an estimated $6,000 in renovations through the Wingham-only Police Reserve Fund.
