Owen Sound Library hosts Olympian and Activist Valerie Jerome for Memoir Series

The Owen Sound Memoir Series is set to host its second monthly event weekend at the Owen Sound public library, featuring Vancouver author Valerie Jerome, a former Canadian Olympian turned activist and speaker.

Ms. Jerome, known for her athletic prowess and advocacy work, particularly during Black History Month, will be the spotlight of the upcoming event on March 1 and 2, 2024.

On Friday, March 1, at 7:00 p.m., Ms. Jerome will read excerpts from her memoir, "Races: The Trials & Triumphs of Canada’s Fastest Family," offering insights into the experiences of Black Canadians and sharing personal anecdotes from her family history.

Jerome represented Canada at the 1960 Rome Olympics, and hails from a family deeply rooted in athletic achievement. Her memoir delves into the challenges of racism within her mixed-race family, the pressures faced as a Black Canadian athlete at the Olympics, and the personal struggles encountered along the way.

Tickets for both events are available for purchase on the Owen Sound Memoir Series website and at the Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library. The venue for both events is the Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library located at 824 1st Ave W. in Owen Sound.
