Man charged after desecration of First Nations elder's remains

A North Bruce Peninsula man is facing charges of indignity to a human body after an investigation by Neyaashiinigmiing Police Service and the OPP.

An OPP spokesperson confirmed the charges are in relation to the cremation of a Chippewas of Nawash elder that was reported on January 6.

According to a statement from the First Nation council, it did not condone the actions of this individual as cremation is not the tradition or practice of their people.

The victim's family also released a statement saying it is now facing pain and trauma, "as what began as a Celebration of Life turned into a mockery in regards to the honour and respect of our beloved deceased."

As a result of the ongoing investigation, the 56-year-old is facing charges of indignity to a human body and fraud under $5,000.

The accused is scheduled to appear in Owen Sound court at the end of the month.

Police say the incident is isolated and there is no concern for public safety.

If anyone has any information, they are being asked to contact the Neyaashiinigmiing Police Service at 519-534-1233 or the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
