Bruce County hopes to host 2026 International Plowing Match

Bruce County Council is on board with trying to bring the International Plowing Match to the area in 2026.

The Bruce County Plowmens Association presented to council on February 1, asking for a motion to support hosting the event, as well as a commitment to discuss a start-up fund or loan and other financial backing.

An official motion will return to council in a few weeks, but members were all receptive to the idea.

Kincardine Mayor Ken Craig says it highlights a sector that is very important to the county.

"I think it draws attention to our world-class farming community, agricultural sector and I think it's just a very wise move on our part as the county council to support their requests in the best fashion we can," he said.

The 2026 event would mark the 50-year anniversary of the first time the IPM came to Bruce County.

As a nod to the history, organizers have proposed holding it in the same location, at the Corner of Durham Road and Bruce Road 3, west of Walkerton.

Over 68,000 people attended the 2023 event in Dufferin, with an estimated 165 jobs created.

Bruce County last hosted the IPM in 2008.
