Hanover police recover stolen vehicle, locate weapons

Two men were arrested and a cache of weapons was found following reports of a suspicious vehicle.

Hanover police said they responded to an apartment complex on 11th Avenue just before 6 a.m. on Friday after reports of a suspicious vehicle parked in the parking lot. When officers arrived, the suspicious vehicle attempted to leave the parking lot but was blocked by police.

"The investigation determined the two adult males were operating a 2018 stolen Audi from the Collingwood area," police said in a release. They added that the licence plates on it belonged to a 1998 Audi.

A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of a .22 calibre semi-automatic rifle, loose ammunition, .22 calibre magazines, a gun belt with a gun holster, break-in tools, a machete, an axe, a number of cell phones, and other items.

Two men were arrested without incident.

A 36-year-old man of no fixed address faces 8 charges, including unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm obtained by crime, and operation of a vehicle while prohibited.

A 26-year-old Gravenhurst man faces 9 charges including several gun offences and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

The investigation is ongoing.

Hanover police are asking anyone with information to contact them at 519-364-2411 or Crime Stoppers of Grey Bruce at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
