Owen Sound garbage bag tag price hike defeated

A proposal to increase the cost of garbage bag tags in the City of Owen Sound is off the table.

This week, Owen Sound city council voted against the bylaw amendment needed to implement the proposed bag tag price change to $3.50. That means the price Owen Sound bag tags will remain at $2.50 each.

The city uses bag tags to ensure users cover the cost of garbage collection, while encouraging waste reduction and responsible disposal.

When it comes to recycling, residents are being reminded to sort and recycle paper, glass, and plastics diligently and to rinse items first. Materials contaminated with food, oils, dirt, paint, or other residue cannot be recycled and may even result in entire loads being rejected by processors and sent to landfill.

Residents should consider composting, using reusable bottles, and cutting down on packaging waste.
