The province's Special Investigations Unit has ended an investigation into an incident in South Huron.
On August 18 around 10 p.m., Huron County OPP officers responded to a call about a man who was in a drug-induced psychotic state. The man allegedly went to an acquaintance's home, and the homeowner called police after they became concerned for their safety and the other people in the home's safety, as well as the suspect in question.
Officers arrived and found the man in the attached garage and confronted him there. The man was not of sound mind according to officers, and had an open torso wound and was talking about further self harm. The man reached for a cable to a table saw, and an officer fired a conducted energy weapon, and incapacitated the man, at which point he was arrested.
Emergency medical staff who were on-hand administered treatment to the man, who was transported to hospital and treated for an eviscerated bowel.
SIU Director Joseph Martino has deemed the investigation over, as it was plain and obvious that the man’s serious injury was not caused by the conduct of the police. The SIU's position is that the officers’ interventions likely saved the man's life. As a result, the file is now closed.
