Huron-Perth Period Poverty Taskforce praises feds, says more needs done

The Huron-Perth Period Poverty Taskforce has praised the federal government, amid regulations that say free menstrual products must be provided in federally regulated workplaces across Canada.

But Beth Rumble, a member of the taskforce as well as the director of cultural services and county librarian for the County of Huron, told CKNXNewsToday.ca that more needs to be done.

"It's absolutely a step in the right direction," she said. "I think there's more that can be done for those that are on a lower income and also addressing the root causes of the issue. I think beyond offering pads and tampons, considerations regarding diversity of needs and different body types, as well as the environmental implications."

Rumble says for those in need, products at work are helpful but a full box would help them better navigate that time of the month comfortably at home.

Currently, the Huron-Perth Period Poverty Taskforce is offering free products at libraries in Huron-Perth to improve the situation locally.

Rumble encouraged those that have the means to help to donate products.

"Make your own donations to your local food banks, women's shelters, any time there's a product drive happening, contribute to those so there is more volume of supply in the system," she said.

More information on the taskforce's free products in libraries can be found here.
