Local resident loses $100,000 in crypto scam

Huron County OPP are investigating a cryptocurrency scam that has cost a local resident heavily.

Police were contacted on September 14 by a Huron East resident who reported losing $100,000 in an internet investment scam between July and September 2023. The victim explained to police that they were referred to a cryptocurrency investment website by a person not known to them who made contact by text message initially.

The victim initially invested $500 and was promised certain profits on their investment. The victim then invested an additional $100,000.

Fraudsters then froze the investment and ceased communication with the victim. Police are urging everyone to be extremely wary of online investment scams.

If you fall victim to a fraud or know someone who has, contact your local police service to report the crime and report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) at 1-888-495-8501 or online on the Fraud Reporting System (FRS), even if a financial loss did not occur.
