Firefighters set for 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb in Owen Sound

Firefighters from Grey and Bruce Counties will take part in the third annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb on Sunday, September 17 at 10:30 a.m. at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.

Captain Drew Mackinnon and Firefighter Brent Radmore of the Township of Chatsworth Fire Department organized the event in 2021 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York City.

This family-friendly event is free and accessible to the public, with plenty of seating to watch the contestants run eleven laps around the Bayshore Arena.

They'll have to move up and down the rows of stairs, which equals approximately 1800 steps, about the number of steps the emergency responders had to climb on September 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center.

Participants will be doing the climb in full firefighter bunker gear, equipped with a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).

Donations are being accepted for the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Grey Bruce Youth Awareness Programs.

This event is organized and run by the Township of Chatsworth Fire Association with the help of neighboring fire departments. There will be various vendors on site, including Troy Life & Fire Safety with some demonstrations and activities, as well as fire trucks out front for children to enjoy.
