Details for 2023 Wingham Terry Fox Run released

The Wingham Terry Fox Run will be held again this year, which will mark 36 years since it started.

Organizers Scott Miller and Steve Jackson have released the details for the run this year, which will be held Sunday, September 17 at the Wingham Lion’s Picnic Shelter by the splash pad. At 10 a.m. registration opens, and the walk or run starts at 11 a.m. There is a free post event BBQ supported by R.J Burnside and Associates, Fogal’s Your Independent Grocer and Howick Mutual Insurance.

This is the second year for Miller and Jackson as organizers after taking the torch from Dale and Linda Edgar, who started the run in Wingham in honour of their daughter, who died of cancer at a very young age. Dale and Linda raised $560,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation in the 34 years they ran the event.

In 2022, Miller and Jackson, both testicular cancer survivors, took over organizing duties, bringing in $28,339 thanks to 160 participants, and 175 donors.

"A huge thanks goes out our numerous donors, and sponsors, including R.J Burnside and Associates, Fogal’s Your Independent Grocer, and Howick Mutual Insurance. Our registration volunteers, Steve and Trish Sabourin, Heather Moore, and Linda Stobo, and our vital 'teams', established in honour of local loved ones lost to cancer," Miller shared in a release.

Last year, Team Newson, in honour of Dean Newson, Taylor’s Team, in honour of Taylor Mann, and Ange’s Superheroes, in honour of Ange Chester, raised a combined $7500.  Money raised goes to the Terry Fox Foundation, which has funded 1,300 unique cancer research projects over the past 42 years. The ultimate goal is to honour Terry Fox’s final wish, to rid the world of cancer.

There are multiple Terry Fox Run’s across Midwestern Ontario. Runs in Brussels, Lucknow, Kincardine, and Owen Sound raise thousands of dollars each year, as well. All Terry Fox Run’s take place on Sunday, September 17th this year.
