Former Bluewater Young Offenders Centre gains interest from companies

Two more companies have expressed interest in leasing property on the site of the former Bluewater Young Offenders Centre on Highway 21. Central Huron Mayor, Jim Ginn said no decision was made at this week's council meeting.

Ginn said they currently have a letter of intent from one company that is interested in producing hydrogen.

“We have other businesses that are interested and at our council meeting Monday night, we did have two companies," he said. "They have some synergies between them, so they're interested in the site. I'm not able to name them but interest continues and we wanted to bring this information to council.”

He said there was a lot to digest and staff will bring back their recommendation.

“They produced a lot of numbers for us, but they're their numbers and we need to verify it," said Ginn. "We may need to talk to engineers, planners, economic development people just to make sure that the numbers we're hearing are valid and then whether it's the type of business we want in there or not.”

Ginn expects it will be a couple of months before a decision is made and if everything works out with those two businesses, there's still room for more on the property.
