Local OPP are reminding residents to think twice about sharing intimate content online after a Perth County resident reported a "sextortion" scam last week.
On Thursday, August 24 around noon, Perth County OPP were called to investigate an extortion incident.
The victim reported meeting the suspect on a popular social media platform and sharing a video with them. Upon sending the video, the victim began receiving messages demanding money or the video would be shared widely.
Police say a single payment was made to the unknown individual, but once a second payment was demanded, the victim contacted authorities.
OPP estimate that only 5-10% of frauds are reported, often due to embarrassment associated with being tricked or defrauded.
They advise if someone demands payment and threatens to share your photos or videos, never pay the money. Screen shot their messages and usernames, block them from social media and contact police immediately.
