Local nurse promoting rural healthcare with Gateway Centre

A registered nurse in Goderich is also working with the Gateway Center of Excellence in Rural Health to help promote rural health.

Ally Hulley was also one of the speakers at the Centre's recent White Paper Day, where all of the summer students made a presentation about their projects for the summer. Hulley helped organize this summer's Camp Discovery Health Care, which is a one-week camp that promotes different health care careers to students. Hulley says they bring a number of different health care specialists to the camp.

“That allows students to see the different career paths involved, starting from high school, including what courses, what extracurriculars and moving on to university. Talking about what kind of programs will lead them to the possible outcome that they want," Hulley shared.

Hulley suggests that people coming out of high school who would like to work in the health care field, but aren't sure where they should network and volunteer and make connections with people in the health care field, can benefit from things like this.

“You can learn a lot in four hours doing a shadow shift, doing a shadow experience. And in that four hours you might say I could absolutely never do this or I absolutely love this, so exposing yourself to as many opportunities," added Hulley.

Hulley says the most important thing for students considering a career in health care is to just put themselves out there and ask questions and find out what opportunities exist around them, and the more exposure they can get to the health care field, the better their chances are of making the right decision for them.
