Inquest set in Exeter shooting death

A inquest will get underway next month into the death of an Exeter man.

The West Regional Supervising Coronerhas announced the inquest into the death of Wade Vander Wal will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, September 18, 2023.

Vander Wal, 44, died in hospital on December 3, 2019, after being shot by an Ontario Provincial Police officer in Exeter. An inquest into his death is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will probe just what happened and the jury could provide recommendations in an effort to prevent further deaths. The inquest is expected to last 10 days and hear from approximately nine witnesses.

Dr. John Carlisle will be the presiding officer and Jai Dhar will be inquest counsel. The inquest will be conducted by video conference. Members of the public who wish to view the proceedings can click this link:
