Goderich Deputy Mayor Trevor Bazinet said council has been looking for a better way to recognize people have gone above and beyond in their community. Bazinet said in the past they have recognized one person or one group of people at a council meeting.
“What we want to do is create an event in April where it's a nomination process," he explained. "So you would be nominated by a person of the public, a citizen, and it would be reviewed by council and we would like to have a ceremony to not just recognize one person here and there.”
Bazinet continued the ceremony will be called the Remarkable Citizen Ceremony and will be held every year at town hall.
“We feel it's important to recognize volunteers in our community or people who have done something amazing in an organization or something and we're asking the public to take the time when this nomination process begins to fill out the form where we can bring these people in and recognize them appropriately,” added Bazinet.
Bazinet said volunteers are the back bone of most of the communities in Huron County and without them most communities wouldn't have the things that residents value and count on. He suggested without the time and work they put into projects and the money they raise for projects small towns would really struggle. He concluded that it is important to recognized those people because without those amenities it would be very difficult to keep people in the communities or attract new people to the communities.
