Huron County's Behind the Bars exhibit at the Historic Gaol has had a great summer for the exhibit.
Program Coordinator, Kyra Lewis, said the number of people attending the exhibit has been very encouraging and the volunteers portraying inmates are doing a great job.
“It's a really immersive way to learn our county's history," said Lewis. "The gaol was a really pivotal role in the beginning of the county, so it's really cool to kind of be able to learn through interaction.”
The Behind the Bars exhibit involves volunteers being assigned the role of one of the people sentenced to time in the gaol. They interact with and answer questions from the visitors going through the exhibit. Lewis said it's very interesting to see some of the things that justified putting people in jail at that time.
“It was a different time," she said. "There's a few people in for insulting language if they were saying something, or children could be put in the jail for skipping school, things like that. It was a different time for sure. But we've come a long way."
The Behind the Bars exhibit runs every Tuesday and Thursday evening until August 31. More information about Behind the Bars can be found on the Huron Historic Gaol website.
