West Nile Virus found in St. Marys

Public health officials are reminding people of the ways to protect themselves from mosquito bites after the West Nile Virus was found in St. Marys.

Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) says mosquitos collected from a trap in the Perth County town tested positive for the virus. This marks the first time this year that the virus has been found in Huron or Perth County.

“It’s not surprising to see WNV positive mosquito pools in the month of August,” said HPPH Public Health Inspector Dale Lyttle. “In the late summer months, people are at greatest risk of contracting West Nile Virus, so it is important to protect yourself while outdoors, especially when mosquitoes are most active.”

Fortunately, most people who are exposed to the West Nile Virus do not develop symptoms. But for those who do, most experience mild symptoms like fever, headache, body ache, nausea, and rashes on the chest, stomach, or back. Roughly one in 150 people infected will get seriously ill.

According to HPPH, symptoms normally develop between two to 15 days after a person is bitten by an infected mosquito. Those most at risk of illness are those older than 50 and those with weakened immune systems.

To protect yourself from mosquito bites, HPPH recommends:

Using an insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin when outdoors. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions.

Covering up with light-colored clothes, long sleeves, and pants when outdoors or in areas where mosquito activity is high.

Taking extra protection measures at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

Removing standing water around the home at least once a week to reduce mosquito breeding grounds.
