Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week scholarship goes to Seaforth native

An aspiring swine veterinarian from the Seaforth area is the recipient of the 14th annual Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week Prize.

This year's $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Dr. Hannah Jansen by the Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week Committee.

Jansen grew up on a swine and cash crop farm near Seaforth. She originally pursued a career in nursing, but missed the animals and farming community, so she made the switch to veterinary school.

Now, she is working four days a week at South West Ontario Veterinary Services, and one day a week, sharing the on-call schedule at Blyth Veterinary Services.

She says her experience so far has been great.

"At both practices, I've really enjoyed meeting the farmers so far and getting to know the various operations," says Jansen. "As I start my career, it is my hope to be part of these farming teams, helping both the farmers to be economically successful, but equally striving to provide the animals with the most humane care."

Grey Bruce Farmers Week established the scholarship in conjunction with the University of Guelph back in 2009.
