Another gift card scam causes loss of thousands of dollars

Police are once again reminding residents to never allow remote access to computers following another costly scam.

Perth County OPP began an investigation on July 21 after being contacted by a 55-year-old West Perth resident regarding a reported fraud.

The investigation found the victim gave remote access to an unknown person, giving access to their banking online. The victim had money withdrawn to pay for gift cards, with losses totalling over $40,000.

Computer users are reminded that, unless you initiate the call, do not allow anyone access to your computer. Don't give out personal, banking or credit card information to anyone unless you are sure of whom you are dealing with.

For more information on fraud, call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or http://www.antifraudcentre.ca.
