Coroner's inquest set for Wellesley collision victim

A man who was killed five years ago while working at a construction site in Wellesley will be the subject of a coroner's inquest next month.

Lawrence Brubacher-Horst, a 24 year-old from Wallenstein, died in a collision on Boomer Line on March 13, 2018.

Waterloo Regional Police said Brubacher-Horst was standing on a flatbed trailer loading a piece of equipment when an oncoming car struck the trailer's ramp and became airborne. The car struck him before vaulting overtop of a pickup truck and crashing into a hydro pole.

A then 19-year-old man from Listowel was charged with careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act in relation to the collision. He was sentenced to two years probation and a fine of $1,875 at the Provincial Offences Courthouse in Kitchener.

Brubacher-Horst's death will be the subject of a joint inquest, along with that of Talbot Bouwman, who died on October 18, 2018, and Adam Chmielarz, who died on December 17, 2020. All three were struck by vehicles while working at construction sites.

Dr. David A. Cameron, Regional Supervising Coroner for Inquests, announced that the inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 8.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths. It is expected to last nine days.

Jennifer Scott will be the Presiding Officer and Peter Napier will be Inquest Counsel.

The inquest will be conducted by video conference. Members of the public who wish to view the proceedings can do so here.
