The Township of North Huron is marking National Drowning Prevention Week by promoting water safety.
Over 450 people fatally drown annually in Canada.
The Lifesaving Society Canada points out drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death for children and the third leading cause of unintentional death for adults. Sadly, the majority of drowning fatalities involve victims who never planned to go swimming, and were within 15 metres of safety.
During the week of July 16 to 22, 2023, Lifesaving Society Canada is educating and promoting safety awareness in, on, and around the water. Always supervise children around bodies of water. People should take swimming lessons, and wear a properly fitting life jacket on a boat. Alcohol and aquatic activities don't mix.
“The majority of drownings are preventable in a Water Smart community. The Township of North Huron is excited to be an affiliate of the Lifesaving Society and share this message during National Drowning Prevention Week” said Reeve Paul Heffer. “I encourage you all to participate in the events at the North Huron Wescast Community complex beginning Sunday, July 16th to learn the Water Smart messages and skills to keep yourself, your family, and your community Water Smart.”
