The OPP say that 2023 has so far been a very deadly one on the roads.
A release from the OPP states that so far, 2023 is on track to become an extremely deadly year for fatal crashes and one of the most deadly in recent memory.
"OPP officers have responded to 136 fatal collisions in which 150 people were killed. By comparison, there were 103 fatal road crashes and 125 lives lost at this time last year. The current rise in fatalities follows a year that saw an already historically high number of deaths on OPP-patrolled roads, with 2022's 359 fatalities marking a 16-year high," the release shared.
Just this month, OPP officers responded to 15 fatal crashes resulting in 18 deaths, just from June 1 to June 11. In 2022 over the same 11 days to open June, there were 4 fatal crashes with 4 total deaths.
Police say that crashes are being caused by typical poor driving habits, including speeding, distracted driving, careless driving, lack of seatbelts and impaired driving.
