The Wingham Salvation Army has expressed the need for donations, after seeing a steep increase in need for services.
"The thrift store has been busier as people are looking for low cost alternatives to what else is out there," said Josh Edwards, Wingham Salvation Army's corps leader. "We're also seeing a significant increase in the need for our food bank services, housing assistance, paying for rent, and finding housing."
Edwards added they also partner up with other churches in town to run a free takeout meal program on Wednesdays. The increased need has led to the need for donations.
"I think that there's a lot to be said for grocery prices and the cost of living increasing. We're actually seeing more and more seniors who once upon a time budgeted to live on a pension that is no longer suitable for them with today's prices," he said.
Edwards said if you are looking to help out, donations of used clothing, cash donations, or a box of food are very useful for them. Donating isn't something that Edwards feels should break the bank, either, if you can't afford it.
"Secondhand goods are a good way to go through your closet, maybe stuff that has been sitting in the garage for a little bit. If it's not something [you] still need, then maybe it can be a treasure to someone else. And that income helps us support our community program," Edwards said.
Anyone who is currently struggling, Edwards said they are there to help.
"We see a lot of people feeling ashamed to come in and use our services. But, we're here to help in that time of need, and there's no shame in that. We want to be able to bring a smile to your face and take one thing off your plate that's causing you stress," he said.
