Bluewater council rejects request for off-leash dog park

Dog owners in the municipality of Bluewater are going to have to wait a little longer for an off-leash dog park.

Bluewater council turned down the request at a recent meeting.

“Council made a decision the other evening that we're not going to put any money into a dog part at this time," said Mayor Paul Klopp. "But, that doesn't mean that our dog owners cannot work together and come up with a plan.”

Klopp pointed out there was no money put into the budget for a dog park and it became clear to the councillors, regardless of their feelings about a dog park, that wasn't the issue.

"The issue for us are we going to put money into it or not and the motion was not to invest any money into dog parks at this time,” he said.

Klopp says another issue is deciding where a dog park would be located. He said Bluewater is fairly well spread out, so locating the dog park at one end of the municipality over another wouldn't be very popular.

Klopp suggested the dog owners should get together and find a common piece of ground and if it happened to be land that the municipality already owned, then council might be more inclined to look at that option because it wouldn't involve spending any money on land for the park. Klopp added the municipality has done that in the past so it might be the best chance of getting the dog park.
