Brockton could soon recoup firefighting costs from insurance companies

The Walkerton Fire Department may soon be able to recover additional expenses for fighting blazes through property owners' insurance policies.

At this week's meeting, Municipality of Brockton council directed staff to work toward entering an agreement with Fire Marque, a third party company that specializes in recovering money from insurance companies.

Standard policies provide coverage to pay these costs, but because Brockton does not currently bill for these services, insurance companies retain all the funds.

Several area fire stations are already using the company, including Hanover, Arran-Elderslie, South Bruce and South Bruce Peninsula.

Coun. Carl Kunhke supported bringing in the outside help to recoup costs.

"If we're going to get 70 per cent for nothing, and we get back 10 bucks, we just made seven bucks more than we made last year," he said. "So I'm in full support of this, letting professionals do it and letting our staff and our firefighters fight fires and not try and become insurance-fighting bureaucrats."

A by-law to solidify the agreement will return to council at a later date.
