The Lake Huron Coastal Centre’s Coast Watchers volunteers have completed their work for 2022 and are now looking ahead to 2023.
Coastal Stewardship Technician Alyssa Bourassa described the Coast Watchers as community scientists who collect data once a week from May till October.
“They collect data on weather conditions, algae blooms, plastic pollution, human activity, erosion and wildlife. So, the data that they collect is inputted into our eighteen-year data set,” said Bourassa.
The data helps identify trends over time.
“Each year, we create an annual Coast Watchers report to inform the public about our findings. This year’s report has just been published, and we are also accepting volunteers for the 2023 season,” Bourassa added.
