United Housing for All in Saugeen Shores wants to work closely with Bruce County Council to improve housing affordability and keep the homeless safe.
Appearing before councillors, the group said homelessness is a hidden issue where even the employed may find themselves without a place to call home. Instead, they couch surf, stay with friends and relatives, or live in a hotel. Others reside in a tent.
“Back in early November last year, the Saugeen Shores Police Service issued a warning to hunters to be aware of homeless individuals residing in wooded areas in town. Homeless people have been found in ATM kiosks, near our town trails, and in public washrooms,” said the group. “There is a benevolent fund set up to help with temporary housing in local hotels and then to get people set up with the appropriate agencies to get further support.”
The group wants to hold a homelessness and poverty forum this year where stakeholders can brainstorm solutions. It hopes to include government officials, churches, service providers, community groups, police and building experts.
“We realize that the county is doing this to some extent with the preparation of an updated housing plan. We want to work together with the county and other groups and do what government may not be able to do. We are also thinking of bringing in a speaker or two.”
The group wants to develop a plan for Saugeen Shores. Already, it identified the need for warming centres and mental health supports.
The Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness reported food bank use is at a record high, while homelessness has jumped 34 per cent.
