Donations needed at local food banks as usage rises

The holiday season is upon us and added expenses, coupled with high inflation, are causing more individuals and families than ever to use services offered by local food banks.

Kincardine Food Bank spokesperson Rose Morrison said they are seeing more traffic through their doors now than ever.

“Our clients are steadily growing each day. There’s a lot of families, there’s a lot of singles, and we’re seeing a large increase in our seniors,” said Morrison.

She urges anyone who is able to donate, to please do. Every donation makes a difference.

“Laundry soap, dish soap, cheeses, anything that might be considered expensive. Also any sort of protein, like salmon, tuna, that sort of stuff. Anything is needed at the food bank,” she said.

Morrison would like to remind residents to check their donations before dropping them off, as their volunteers often spend a lot of time checking expiry dates.

“Check [the expiry date] before you bring [your donation] because if they’re expired, we have to dispose of them. That money comes out of the income that we generate since we have to pay to take them to the dump,” said Morrison.

The Kincardine Food Bank is located at the Anglican Church, 415 Russell St E, and open for pick up on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
