Ford defends handling of healthcare as CHEO calls in the Red Cross

Premier Doug Ford defended his government's handling of the healthcare system following word an Ottawa children's hospital had to call in the Red Cross to cope with an influx of patients.

Earlier this week, MPP Robin Martin, who was standing in for Health Minister Sylvia Jones, told the legislature relying on the Red Cross was part of their planning to make sure they had the care they needed for pediatric patients.

At a news conference Wednesday morning, Ford didn't walk back the comment.

"We're adding more beds, we've added over 3,000 [and] we're adding another 3,500 beds on top of that," said Ford. "We're putting $40 billion into 50 projects across Ontario and we're throwing everything we can at the healthcare system."

Ford also pointed out that his government is building a new medical school in Brampton to train more doctors. He was asked again if his government really is doing all it can.

"There's a tremendous amount of things that we're doing. I know CHEO (Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario) is having a few bumps in the road but they're going to be okay," he said.

Ford said he's been in contact with the president and CEO of CHEO and said he's thinking outside the box.
