Four Candidates run for Mayor of North Huron

Four candidates are vying for the mayor's seat in the Municipality of North Huron.

Incumbent Bernie Bailey faces three challengers; current deputy Reeve Trevor Seip, Councillor Paul Heffer, and political newcomer Ranko Markeljevic.

Bailey said he wants to see through a number of projects and help improve the tax base.

"I would like to stay on and finish off the Hutton Heights project, we still haven't got neighbours to sign contracts for water. There's so much on the go and so much that could help North Huron. I just want to see it completed and not stopped halfway wasting the money we spent," he explained.

Bailey added, "I don't think there's been a move in Wingham and all of North Huron in 40 years, so I started this with the help of the council and we need to continue. This is the only way to bring new taxes on line. More people have to pay into the pot."

Markeljevic wants to address transparency, accountability and the tax rate.

"Increase the rate base, the tax base, to reduce the tax rate," he explained.

He said he wants to create a long term plan for housing to help reduce the tax rate, but added he's still working out the details.

"I don't know exact [details], because I don't know exactly what township owns. I haven't been able to find that out. A lot of the information that I think should be readily available on the township website is not," he continued.

Seip wants to unify the municipality and council while reinvesting in infrastructure.

"What really has inspired me is to have a different voice as the reeve, through more of a leadership role in the municipality. To listen and to ensure that every voice is heard respectfully," said Seip.

Seip said he has been on council for the past eight years, serving as Deputy Reeve for the past four years. He said he's willing to voice his opinion.

"I've been that person, that voice, that has not always went along with the convention of people and I've also been that person who is willing to talk to and listen to other municipalities, and respect the people's opinion," said Siep.

Heffer said he wants to foster stronger relationships with other municipalities, to make some goals more feasible.

"I worked with the council trying to grow our municipality and also I try to provide some common sense decisions for the betterment of our municipality. So I just decided that I'm going to put my name forward," said Heffer.

Heffer wants to ensure the municipality is preparing for the future though asset management.

"We have a small population so we have to spend accordingly and I feel by doing that we will provide adequate services for our community," said Heffer.
