More weekend ER closures in Midwestern Ontario

The Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance has added an additional closure of the Wingham Emergency room due to staff shortages.

In addition to a Friday night closure, the Wingham and District Hospital will now also be closed Saturday evening until Sunday August 28th at 7 p.m.

The Listowel Wingham Hospitals Alliance will have the following temporary closures: • Wingham and District Hospital Emergency Department closed Friday August 26th from 5:00 p.m. until Saturday August 27th at 7:00 a.m. • Wingham and District Hospital Emergency Department closed Saturday August 27th from 5:00 p.m. until Sunday August 28th at 7:00 p.m.

Patients are asked to call 911 if they have a medical emergency. Emergency Medical Services will remain available to the community and will be re-routed to surrounding hospitals to ensure local residents continue to have access to the emergency services they need.

For non urgent health care call Health Connect Ontario at 811, which is available 24/7 for non-emergency health-related questions.

The closest hospitals to Wingham are: ▪ Listowel – 35 km ▪ Clinton – 36 km ▪ Walkerton - 39 km ▪ Palmerston – 43 km ▪ Goderich – 47 km ▪ Seaforth – 49 km ▪ Kincardine – 55 km

People should call ahead to ensure the hospital you plan to present to is open.

Additionally, the Chesley Hospital Emergency Department will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, August 26th until 7 a.m. on Saturday, the 27th. It will close again on Saturday, August 27th at 5 p.m. and re-open Sunday the 28th at 7 a.m. Sunday it will close at 5 p.m. and reopen Monday the 29th at 7 a.m. Finally, it will close again on Monday the 29 at 5 p.m. again, resuming regular operating hours at 7 a.m. on the 30th.

Also, the Walkerton Hospital Emergency Department will close at 8 p.m. on Monday, August 29th until Tuesday, September 30th at 7 a.m.

A media release calls it a temporary measure as a result of the precarious health human resources situation.
