Fake toonies circulating in Owen Sound

If you're near Owen Sound and have some toonies in your pocket, there's a chance some of them are counterfeit.

The Owen Sound Police Service issuing a warning to citizens in-and-around the city today that there is a quote-"prevalence of fake toonies in the community."

They note that a number of the fake coins have been found at local businesses and banks within the city.

There are some noticeable differences between the real and fake versions, namely a two-toed front right paw on the polar bear portion of the coin, as opposed to a more uniform paw on the real coin.

On the reverse side, the Queen's profile seems to be different around the nose and cheeks. The Queen's hair on the fake coins also seems to be less detailed compared to the real toonie.

Despite a number of different designs over the years, the counterfeit versions of the toonie circulating near Owen Sound all seem to be a recreation of the original toonie design.

Anyone that thinks they have counterfeit toonies in their possession is asked to bring it to a bank for assessment.

Anyone with information on fake toonies circulating near Owen Sound is asked to contact the Owen Sound Police Service.
