Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph public health has confirmed its first local case of monkeypox.
In a release, the health unit says the case is in a male from Guelph that is between 20 and 30 years old.
Follow-up treatment and contact tracing are underway.
Associate Medical Officer of Health Matthew Tenenbaum says "There is no increased risk of monkeypox to the general public stemming from this case."
Human monkeypox is caused by the monkeypox virus, which is related to the smallpox virus. It presents with symptoms similar to smallpox that are usually less severe, including fever, headache, fatigue and rash/lesions.
