Bruce Power has announced plans for potential hydrogen production in Bruce, Grey and Huron counties.
The nuclear operator has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with companies in the Clean Energy Frontier region (Bruce, Grey, Huron) who will collaborate on a study to determine opportunities for the production of hydrogen using excess energy, gained by leveraging optimized site output.
Bruce Power President and CEO Mike Rencheck says "The industry can play a leadership role in the fight against climate change by leveraging and optimizing our assets, as well as our many decades of experience and expertise with nuclear innovation."
According to a release, Bruce Power says this builds on the operator's support of the provincial government's hydrogen strategy, which includes examining ways to support the province's clean technology sector.
The announcement comes a month after Bruce Power said it was exploring the potential for carbon-free technology to advance opportunities to market and mass-produce hydrogen to help Ontario and Canada meet climate change targets.
Canada, and other countries around the globe, continue to examine the viability of incorporating hydrogen as a part of a clean energy mix in order to reach greenhouse gas emission reduction targets.
