Saugeen Shores unveils indigenous painting

The Town of Saugeen Shores will mark the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by unveiling a new painting by an indigenous artist.

The town commissioned the piece from artist Brent Henry following the discovery of unmarked gravesites at several former residential schools.

The painting will be revealed tomorrow at a ceremony at 9am at the Town of Saugeen Shores Municipal Office.

A media release from the municipality says the painting will be a permanent installation at the Municipal Office, The painting will hang in the Council Chambers as a continuing reminder of the pain and suffering caused by Canada’s residential schools. Municipal officials say the location was selected to ensure that decision makers never forget the obligation to truth and reconciliation in the Town’s relationship with indigenous neighbours and in all that they do.
