Green Ribbon program to help shoreline property owners in Bruce County

The Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation is offering a free program to provide help to shoreline property owners in Huron-Kinloss, Kincardine and Saugeen Shores to protect their shoreline.

Alyssa Bourassa is a Coastal Stewardship Technician.

She explains the Green Ribbon Champion program provides free beach assessments and restoration recommendations to shoreline property owners in those areas.

She says they assess what plants are on their properties, identify any invasive species, and where they need some work done.

A report is then provided with recommendations and then come in and do whatever work is required.

Bourasso says the problem with the shoreline in the three areas is not with parts of the bluff falling away as it is further south, but it's the destruction of the sand dunes.

“And these dunes are basically the last line of defence to protect people's lake front properties. So people are really interested in keeping these dunes healthy and being there as a barrier,” said Bourassa.
