A presentation to Huron County council this week by the Nuclear Innovation Institute highlighted the need to install more electric vehicle chargers in Huron to attract more tourists.
Presenters pointed out that, given the growing shift in the auto industry towards electric vehicles, there will also be a growing need for more electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Huron County Climate Change and Energy Specialist, Lily Morrow, said one of the things that surprised her in their report was that, despite the fact that there are over 100 electric vehicle chargers in the Huron, Grey Bruce area, many find it hard to find them.
“Over 80 per cent of survey respondents thought it was very difficult to find electric vehicle charging. So this just highlights the opportunity to work with Economic Development to promote the use of the chargers that we have and those that we're working to install in Huron County.”
Morrow says another part of building that infrastructure is working neighbouring counties to build a network of charging stations.
“We're working with Wellington County and many others, we're working with the city of Guelph and Bruce County and Grey County on that and that is the idea, that we're promoting motorists to drive in their electric vehicles from those areas closer to the GTA out, this way, to Lake Huron.”
Morrow adds, the chargers they're working to install will be connected through the Plug Share Network, which is an online platform that helps electric vehicle drivers locate chargers.
