Discussions continue on proposed nuclear fuel repository in South Bruce

The South Bruce Community Liaison Committee (CLC) meets Thursday night, and anyone can join the virtual zoom gathering.

The committee is hosting a talk by Saugeen Ojibway Community Engagement Manager April Root-Thompson. She will discuss their work with the Nuclear Waste Management Organization's proposal to build a deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel in South Bruce. Northern Ontario's Ignace is the only other community still in the running to host the DGR. The SON Environment Office is also engaging with community members about the project.

Participants will also learn about the design and development of the Used Fuel Packaging Plan, which is one of the key surface facilities at the proposed DGR

Meantime, an organization concerned about plans to build the deep geological repository for used nuclear fuel in south Bruce is exploring the idea of community consent for the project. The Nuclear Waste Management Organization has spent a decade narrowing down their search to a couple of sites.

In a media release, the group "No Nuclear Waste" says the NWMO has not yet defined how "willingness" will be measured, or who makes up the community that can grant consent. Hazardous waste activist John Jackson told the group that a valid, consent or non-consent decision should be made by the people – not by the council. And he suggests the public is not getting all of the information it needs to be informed.

Meantime, South Bruce says a community-driven process to determine how to measure South Bruce’s willingness to host a deep geological repository (DGR) for used nuclear fuel is underway, with a report expected in November.
