Warm and muggy temperatures made conditions favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms, according to Environment Canada.
At just after 2:30 p.m. Saturday, the weather agency issued a severe thunderstorm watch for parts of southwestern Ontario including London-Middlesex, Sarnia-Lambton, Huron-Perth and Grey-Bruce counties.
A storm system was making its way over parts of southern Ontario near and east of Lake Huron.
At around 5 p.m. Saturday, a tornado warning was issued for Owen Sound, Blue Mountains and Norther Grey County. Environment Canada said a confirmed tornado touched down near Chatsworth, and began to head east going 50 kilometres per hour.
Shortly after the first warning was lifted, another tornado warning was issued for Saugeen Shores, Kincardine and Southern Bruce County at around 5:45 p.m. The weather agency has not confirmed if any tornadoes touched down in the area.
Wind gusts up to 90 kilometres per hour are possible in some areas with localized downpours between 30-50 millimetres in an hour or less.
Showers and thunderstorms were expected to develop over parts of the region late Saturday afternoon and throughout the early evening. Meteorologists said there was also a possibility for tornadoes to develop. These types of storms are also capable of bringing large hail.
The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
