Thousands of doses of the COVID-19 vaccine administered in Huron, Perth

Huron Perth Public Health has administered over 13,500 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine since it became available.

On Thursday alone there were 1,000 appointments booked.

And Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Miriam Klassen, says they have been able to use every dose that they have received so far.

"We are able, Huron Perth Public Health together with our partners, administer all the vaccine that we get, so it doesn't hang out in our freezers" said Dr. Klassen. "We do have to keep a couple of days worth of supply in case of vaccine interruption."

And the eligibility of those who can receive the vaccine is being expanded by the regional prioritization committee.

That includes Indigenous persons 16-years of age or older and faith leaders who, as part of their regular role, are at increased risk of exposure when involved with ceremonies involving end of life care and deceased persons.

The booking system is expected to active Friday.

Currently Huron Perth Public Health is tracking two active cases of variants of concern.

There are a total of 11 active cases of COVID-19 in the region.

It is expected that Huron and Perth will stay under the Yellow-Protect category.

"I think at this point we are going to stay where we are," said Dr. Klassen. "Our numbers have dipped down into the green range and if they were to stay there for about two weeks or more, then I think we would anticipate maybe making a change."

But she also points out surrounding regions are under stricter levels.

Lambton is in lockdown while the Waterloo region is red.

Middlesex-London, the Southwestern region and Wellington-Guelph-Dufferin are all orange.

Bruce-Grey remains in green.
