Perth-Wellington MPP points to new tourism support

The MPP for Perth-Wellington says the provincial budget responds to local calls to support the tourism and hospitality sector.

The budget includes what is called the Ontario Tourism and Hospitality Small Business Support Grant.

The $100 million dollar fund will provide one-time payments of $10,000 to $20,000 to eligible small businesses including hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, travel agencies and summer camps, among others.

"Hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts, in particular, are in a difficult position," Pettapiece said. "Even if they could stay open during the shutdown, people were not travelling. It's encouraging that the government heard our calls and will deliver real support."

Pettapiece had written to the province's Minister of Finance, Peter Bethlenfalvy, back on January 22.

On March 4, Stratford Mayor Dan Mathieson, St. Marys Mayor Al Strathdee, and Perth County Warden Jim Aitcheson formally appealed to the government to extend support to the sector.

"I appreciate their leadership," Pettapiece said. "It goes to show that when we make the case together, we can get results," Pettapiece said.

He also recognized local tourism and economic development agencies and municipal staff for their work on the issue.

To qualify for the Tourism and Hospitality Small Business Support Grant, businesses must show at least 20 percent revenue decline and have fewer than 100 employees.

Application details will be made available online at ontario.ca/COVIDsupport.
