Lisa Thompson to serve as Chair of the Commonwealth Woman Parliamentarians - Canada Region

Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson will be filling a new role as Chair of the Commonwealth Woman Parliamentarians -Canada Region.

With International Women's Day right around the corner on March 8th, Thompson says in a release that she is excited to assume her new role and use it to "shine a spotlight on women who paved the path for us." International Women's Day is an annual celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women on a global scale. The Commonwealth Woman Parliamentarians-Canada Region was formed in 2005, and some of its goals include increasing female representation in Canadian governments at all levels and providing a forum to discuss and act on gender-related issues.

Thomspon is the first ever chair of the Commonwealth Woman Parliamentarians -Canada Region from Ontario.

“Women around the world have had to challenge society to change as we strive to ensure opportunities for women in an equitable manner,” says Thompson.
“I hope to utilize this honour to shine a spotlight on women who paved the path for us," adds Thompson. "For instance, Agnes MacPhail from Grey County (who also taught school in Bruce County) was one of the first women elected to Queen’s Park, and Federated Women’s Institutes of Ontario lead by example by championing change throughout the years."
